The Baseball Zone hosted an exciting day of baseball training on Sunday, November 22nd as Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion arrived with 40 lucky kids of all levels and ages to help raise much needed funding for the youth in his native Dominican Republic. With the help of the volunteers from the Edwin Encarnacion Foundation, The Sunrise Foundation DR and sponsorship from Accenture, Rick Johnston and Ryan Armstrong ran the players through skills and drills that made for a highly entertaining day for everyone.
Edwin was outstanding in his generosity by not only donating his time and energy to the event but also in making an effort to drop a few friendly hints for each of the aspiring ball players in attendance. A true gentleman with a warm and engaging personality, Edwin left these boys and girls with memories that will last a lifetime.
"This place (The Zone) has everything you need to become a better player" remarked Edwin, who one day envisions himself running a similar facility in the DR. No doubt RJ and Army would be happy to help out with that project when the time comes!
As an added bonus, the participants were treated to a delicious ballpark hot dog lunch which, in spite of the wintery conditions outside, gave the event the feel of summer afternoon at the diamond.
Thanks also go out to Terrier volunteers Mike and Matt Kemp, Joe Tevlin and Sam Turcotte who helped make the day fun for all in attendance.
